KINGSTON, Jamaica — Dr Gabrielle Henry, the newly crowned Miss Universe Jamaica 2025, is upbeat about her upcoming trip to the United States (US).

She will be the special guest at the Jamaican Women of Florida (JWOF) 13th anniversary Tea Party on Sunday, October 12, at the Colony West Golf Club in Tamarac, Florida.

“I am deeply honoured and grateful to have the opportunity to travel to Florida, particularly to meet with the diaspora attending this year’s tea party entitled ‘Pouring into Purpose’, being held by the Jamaican Women of Florida. I know it will be an exceptional one, and it’s always a pleasure meeting new faces, forming inspiring bonds and celebrating Jamaica’s cultural empowerment, all while representing my country with pride,” Henry told Observer Online on the weekend.

This year’s theme, according to the organiser, is “Pouring into Purpose – Sipping to 13 Years of Service and Sisterhood,” and it promises to be an unforgettable afternoon celebrating culture, community and philanthropy. Guests can look forward to inspirational moments with Dr Gabrielle Henry as she shares her journey.

Attractions include fashion and style highlights, including elegant tea attire and hats; a curated selection of teas and treats; and raffles and silent auction prizes supporting JWOF’s scholarships and mentorship programs.

During her visit to South Florida, Dr Henry will also pay courtesy calls to the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and the Consulate General of Jamaica in Miami. She will also participate in community engagements and media interviews, tour the Island SPACE Caribbean Museum and engage in a fireside chat with members of the diaspora.

Her itinerary also includes a tour of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, reflecting her dedication to giving back.

“This is an exciting moment for our community,” said June Minto, founding member & former president of JWOF. Minto is also a planning committee member. “Dr Henry represents the best of Jamaica—grace, intelligence and purpose. Her presence will inspire women of all ages while strengthening ties between our diaspora community and Jamaica.”

Karl Williams, co-national director of Miss Universe Jamaica and chief executive officer of Atelier Dermoth Williams Limited, the Miss Universe Jamaica management company, added: “We are very appreciative of June Minto, the Jamaica Tourist Board and all stakeholders involved for their efforts in bringing this event to fruition. This is a very important engagement for Dr Henry and indeed for any reigning Miss Universe Jamaica titleholder as part of the preparation process prior to the Miss Universe finals.”

“The Jamaica Tourist Board extends heartfelt congratulations to Dr Gabrielle Henry on being crowned Miss Universe Jamaica 2025! Your grace, intelligence and passion for our beautiful island make you an exceptional ambassador, and we are proud to support you as you represent Jamaica on the global stage at the upcoming Miss Universe competition. We look forward to hosting you and celebrating all that you will accomplish on this incredible journey. Jamaica stands with you every step of the way!” said JTB’s deputy director of tourism for the US, Latin America and the Caribbean, Philip Rose.

Dr Henry will head to Thailand in November to represent Jamaica at the Miss Universe competition, carrying with her the spirit of the island and the support of the diaspora community worldwide.

Trump extends delay on US TikTok ban until mid-December

WASHINGTON, United States (AFP) — United States (US) President Donald Trump on Tuesday extended a delay on enforcing a ban against TikTok until December 16, marking the fourth postponement of a law designed to force the app's sale from its Chinese owner.

The announcement, made through an executive order, came despite Trump telling reporters Tuesday that the United States and China had reached a deal over a new ownership structure for the hugely popular video-sharing app.

The extension builds on previous delays issued in January, April and June as the administration navigates the complex legal and national security implications surrounding TikTok's operations in the United States.

The latest delay was set to expire on Wednesday.

"We have a deal on TikTok, I've reached a deal with China, I'm going to speak to President Xi (Jinping) on Friday to confirm everything up," Trump told reporters on Monday as he left the White House for a state visit to Britain.

"We have a group of very big companies that want to buy it," Trump said, adding that he would "hate to see value like that thrown out the window."

China also confirmed what both sides on Monday called the "framework" of a deal that would be finalised in the phone call between the two leaders on Friday.

TikTok -- which boasts almost two billion global users -- is owned by China-based ByteDance.

According to the Wall Street Journal, TikTok's US business would be controlled by an investor consortium including cloud giant Oracle and venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz, with the Chinese owners keeping 20 per cent of the US business.

Both companies have very close ties to the Trump White House and Oracle already plays a major role in TikTok's US infrastructure.

One of the major questions is the fate of TikTok's powerful algorithm that saw the app become one of the world's most popular sources of online entertainment.

The preliminary deal was negotiated over two days of talks that ended Monday in Madrid between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

Under the order, the US Justice Department is prohibited from taking enforcement action not only during the extended period, but also retroactively for any conduct that occurred since the ban was originally to come into force, on January 19, 2025 -- the day before Trump's inauguration.

The legislation was designed to address national security concerns over TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance and its potential ties to the Chinese government.

The app has faced scrutiny from US officials who worry about data collection and content manipulation.

TikTok has repeatedly denied sharing user data with Chinese authorities and has challenged various restrictions in federal court.
