Greatness Weekend comes for Heroes’ Weekend

Must Read

Promoters of Greatness Weekend are looking to reinstate Kingston as the island’s entertainment capital with a four-day series between October 17 and 20.

Speaking at the press launch last week at Ribbiz Ocean Lounge on the Kingston waterfront, Larone Brown, CEO, Greatness Group and founder of the Pink & White Brunch, noted that the weekend is a direct response to a deficit that existed in the capital during the major holiday weekend.

“When the idea of Greatness Weekend was conceived it came from one single observation that Heroes’ Weekend had become a time when Kingston went quiet… many of the big events were happening outside of the city in St Ann, Montego Bay, and beyond, but Kingston is the heartbeat of our culture. It is the capital of our music, our food, our nightlife, our fashion, and our creativity. Why should Heroes’ Weekend not belong to Kingston too? That is why we introduced a four-day weekend that gives Kingston its rightful place…” Brown said.

Greatness Weekend will kick things off with PCF Night Swim at the recently reopened Rockfort Mineral Bath in St Andrew, while Recall: Short Shorts vs Mini Skirt Festival will be held at Mas Camp, on October 18.

On Sunday, October 19, the focus will shift to CUPS — The Ultra White Affair, celebrating its 10th anniversary at Lot 15 on the Kingston waterfront. The weekend will conclude with the Greatness Pink & White Brunch noted at Hope Gardens in St Andrew.

The promoters for the different events are Curtis Hyatt, Fabian O’Hara, Tamark Bailey, and Larone Brown, respectively. Talisa Taylor is public relations and marketing manager for the event series.

“Each event was chosen for a reason. Each has a story, and together they create a tapestry of experiences that no other city in the Caribbean can offer,” Brown added.

Meanwhile, guest speaker, Mishika Silvera, destination manager, Kingston and St Andrew at Tourism Product Development Company Ltd (TPDCo) hailed the initiative as transformative.

“Having these promoters come together to formulate something like this that Kingston has never seen before, we have to ensure that we put our minds [and] our souls together to ensure that it is seamless,” Silvera said at the launch.

Alpha School of Music Band in NYC

VP Records will host a meet and greet with members of the Alpha School of Music Band on Saturday, October 11, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The free event takes place at the VP Records Retail Store, located at 170-21 Jamaica Avenue in Queens, NY.

Alpha School of Music offers Jamaica’s only tertiary programme focused on ensemble performance. Its Associate Degree in Music Performance combines practical training in accompaniment, solo work, and audio technology to prepare students for work in live and studio settings.

Visitors to the VP Records event will have the opportunity to meet band members Zuri Aiko Gordon (violin, vocals), Jesse Kerr (drums), Joel Wallace (bass), Leon Channer (drums), and Adrian Robinson (piano), along with members of Alpha’s teaching staff.

The group represents the next generation of Jamaican musicians emerging from the school that produced The Skatalites, Johnny Osbourne, Yellowman, and Cedric Brooks. Their visit continues Alpha’s mission to connect classroom training with real-world performance and community engagement.

A 7-inch vinyl of the band’s release The Single Sections will be available for purchase at the event. The record features two Jamaican instrumentals, Eastern Standard Time and Rukumbine, performed by the Alpha ensemble, and has been repressed in a run of 25 copies with new sleeves.

The group is in New York to perform at the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) Hummingbird Gala, held Friday, October 10, at The Plaza Hotel. The event honours individuals advancing Jamaican culture and development, with this year’s honorees including Jason Henzell and Joseph “Joe” Bogdanovich.
